My mom is a woman who truly does it all. From being a full-time science teacher for over 30 years and tirelessly hosting after-school clubs to being an active member of her church community, this lady does everything and more.
Like many Black women, she embodies the “superwoman” mindset and lives by mantras like ‘getting it done,’ ‘twice as good for half as much,’ and ‘go above and beyond.’ (This powerful resilience has sustained the Black community throughout history, and I’m deeply grateful for women like my mother who exemplify it every day.)
To show my appreciation to my mom this Mother’s Day, I treated her to a day of relaxation. We headed to The Veda Den, a Black woman-founded and operated yoga studio in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, known for its wellness practices like sound baths, meditation, and special events—including their Mother’s Day Meditation and Brunch.
The Brunch
Upon our arrival at The Veda Den, we were led to the garden area. Rose bushes dotted the landscape, and picnic tables laden with appetizers invited us to snack. I grabbed some goat cheese, grapes, and crackers, while my mom easily fell into conversation with other attendees—a lovely mix of mothers and daughters, alongside solo moms seeking peaceful ‘me-time.’

As we settled in, a server offered a refreshing mixed salad and fresh veggies, perfect for enjoying in the warm sun. Sparkling water and vibrant hibiscus tea were on offer. I found myself continuously refilling my cup with hibiscus tea throughout the brunch after learning about its antioxidant benefits. (It’s now a definite addition to my daily tea rotation!)
For the main course, homemade shakshuka arrived piping hot. Its aroma of tomatoes, spices, and cheese was truly delicious. While I typically enjoy shakshuka with poached eggs, this version featured hard-boiled eggs—a different but still tasty twist!

My mom savored both the meal and the lively conversation, as discussions naturally centered around motherhood. It was a heartwarming sight to witness women connecting over shared stories of birthdays, children’s milestones, and the universal joys and challenges of being a mom.
To conclude our brunch (and offer a reprieve from the sun), frozen açai bowls were served for dessert. Soon after, the owner, Nicoli, graciously welcomed us inside for the highly anticipated sound bath session.
The Sound Bath

Once everyone was comfortably settled inside the yoga studio, the sound bath began. Nicoli explained that the session would feature crystal and metal bowls, each attuned to a specific chakra, played to facilitate meditation. She spoke beautifully about mindfulness and motherhood, emphasizing that this sound bath was a dedicated moment of serenity for every mother in the room.
As the sounds of twinkling bowls filled the air, I felt myself sink into my body. Time ceased to exist as the gentle vibrations swirled around my spirit, enveloping me in a profound moment of peace at The Veda Den.
All too soon, the tranquil sound bath concluded. Everyone slowly returned to reality, visibly refreshed and relaxed. My mom shared that her body felt lighter and centered, while I felt deeply grounded.
My Takeaways
This Mother’s Day sound bath was a truly healing experience, not just for my mother and me individually, but for our spirits together. Witnessing my mom fully embrace a moment of pure enjoyment—reveling in good weather, delicious food, and positive energy—was a joyous sight for her youngest daughter. The Veda Den beautifully fostered a sense of connection and community among all the families present.
Moving into the second half of 2025, I’m committed to continuing this spiritual journey of healing, community, and deeper understanding, both with my mother and within myself.
