The Safest Ways To Achieve The Hair Color You Want— Expert Advice!

Ahead, learn my tips for achieving the color you desire without damaging your hair.

Hairstylist coloring clients hair

Now’s the perfect time to experiment with new and exciting hair colors! This season, we’ve seen an increase in women stepping outside their comfort zone and trying pink and pastel shades. We’ve also seen bold colors like vibrant reds, deep purples, and eye-catching blues taking over our timelines.

As a professional hairstylist, I’m thrilled to see so much creativity and expression. However, I personally want to caution you to be mindful and do your research before booking your next hair appointment to color your hair.

Ahead, learn my tips for achieving the color you desire without damaging your hair.

Find A Licensed Cosmetologist

Find a licensed cosmetologist with a proven track record of safe hair coloring. Read reviews and don’t be afraid to hop on social media to see their previous work. Remember, your goal is to achieve your hair color safely.

Pay Attention To Terminology

A licensed cosmetologist should always use proper terminology when working with a client. This is not only professional, but also helps the client feel like they are in good hands. I say consider it a red flag if he/she uses the term “bleach” instead of “lightner” and “wash” instead of “shampoo.”

Don’t Skip Out On Quality Service

If a “cosmetologist” requests that you come with your hair already shampooed before they start her/his service, consider this a red flag. Your hairstylist should offer a complete transformation experience, not cut corners.

Always Ask For A Consultation

It is important to book a hair consultation before coloring your hair because it ensures your stylist uses the best products and techniques to achieve your desired color while maintaining the health and integrity of your hair. Be sure that they ask you questions about your hair’s current condition, including its porosity, texture, and any previous chemical treatments.

The Biggest No-No

If he/she suggests a dye found in a box kit, run! Also, stay away from a hairstylist who suggests using a lightener (bleach) for reds or browns.

At Home Advice

If going to a salon is completely out of your budget, I’d caution you to just wait it out. However, if you must, here are three quick tips to safely achieve vibrant and beautiful color at home.

  • ✨️ Never use a lightener at home.
  • ✨️ Use colors with low-level developers like 20-30 volume and dark browns, reds, and oranges. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions to find the best results possible!
  • ✨️ If your hair isn’t completely black, you can get away with using a rinse to get highlights or shimmer.

Ultimately, the goal is for your hair to be as healthy as it can be so you can feel your best. Always proceed with caution when doing it at home, and if you can, invest in a professional stylist.
