Workshop Underground: Creating A Jewelry Heirloom Has Never Been So Easy!

Who doesn't want to create a cherished family heirloom that will be passed down for generations to come?

When BrownStyle Magazine was invited to view the latest gemstone collection at Workshop Underground, we knew we were in for something special.

Nestled in the trendy South Philadelphia neighborhood on South Street, this premier jewelry shop was a total experience. The minute we stepped inside, we were greeted with kindness, along with complimentary drinks and light bites. Reminiscent of artwork displayed in a museum, beautifully designed jewelry—everything from eye-catching necklaces to dazzling diamond rings— beckoned for attention.

Workshop Underground stands out not only for its diverse range of designs, but also for the vision of founder Ruben Luna, who insisted the workshop only use ethically sourced gemstones, responsibly sourced certified diamonds, cultivated lab-grown diamonds, estate pre-owned diamonds, and 100% certified recycled precious metals to create dainty masterpieces right before your eyes.

“After working many years leading creative and merchandising teams, I wanted to have the freedom to create designs where beauty and aesthetics play a more important role than the bottom line,” Luna explains in a candid conversation, noting his love for creating pieces of jewelry that commemorate life events.

Ring & Custom Jewelry Shopping In Philadelphia

Whether you’re seeking a statement piece or something deeply personal, Workshop Underground offers jewelry rooted in modern classicism, with clean lines and simple geometry. With friendly consultations, the team can also help you create customized jewelry that makes you feel connected to your selection.

Luna admits his own piece of “pure comfort” is a classic gold-domed wedding band: “When you look at it, you think about your father or grandfather and instantly feel their warmth,” the creative director explains.

That mix of nostalgia and refinement is what keeps clients coming back, especially during wedding season when the shop becomes a go-to destination for bridal parties looking to create memories filled with opulence, unity, and love.

Imagine gathering your closest friends for a celebration in-store—complete with non-alcoholic drinks, champagne, and delicious bites— to select timeless gifts for your wedding party. Talk about goals!

Workshop Underground also offers an impressive line of men’s jewelry designed to suit every personality.

“It’s all about intentional design and craftsmanship. We use the same quality materials, like natural Akoya and Tahitian pearls, as high jewelry heritage brands, but at much more accessible price points,” the Columbia University alum explains.

Creating A Jewelry Company With A Heart

Beyond beauty, Workshop Underground has a legacy of giving back. Since its inception in 2015, the brand has donated over $250,000 to local schools, arts programs, and community organizations through in-store fundraising events.

“This year, we are celebrating our 10th anniversary in a community that has welcomed us since day one. We are proud to showcase works from local and BIPOC artists and small-batch craft makers that complement our own jewelry collections,” Luna shares.

At the core of it all, Luna says what he loves most is creating jewelry that becomes part of someone’s story, whether it’s a bespoke engagement ring or a classic pair of diamond stud earrings for a milestone birthday.

And as for the future? Luna hopes Workshop Underground will be known for one thing: “Creating cherished family heirlooms that will be passed down for generations to come.”
