Your hair deserves a seasonal glow-up! But the question is, where do you start? Hoping to take the stress out of switching it up, we spoke to an expert to learn the best ways to level up your look— without compromising your hair’s health.

To guide us through what’s hot (and hydrating) this season, we caught up with Nick Stenson, a hairstylist and founder of Nick Stenson Beauty, who knows exactly how to balance style with hair health.

According to Stenson, there are two big trends to keep an eye on this season. Ahead, learn what colors/styles are trending and find out Stenson’s expert advice on keeping your hair healthy this season.

Cowboy Copper & Other Rich Tones

This season, mocha and copper shades are stealing the spotlight!

According to Stenson, Cowboy Copper is “going to be even bigger” thanks to its rich and warm color that’s easy to achieve without compromising your hair’s health. “Copper works for most people and doesn’t always require heavy lighting,” he explains.

That’s great news because it means you can dive into the seasonal trend without risking excessive damage. These tones don’t just match the season— they enhance it, pairing beautifully with warm makeup palettes and the golden glow of winter lights.

Getting Plenty Of Moisture

Before you dive into new styles or shades, there’s one thing Stenson wants you to focus on first: moisture.

“Think of your hair like your skin—if your lips are chapped, there’s a good chance your hair needs hydration too,” he explains, noting the heat and humidity of the Summer is notoriously hard on hair.

His solution is simple: turn to moisturizing Shampoos and Conditioners (Shop On Amazon) and add a deep mask to your weekly lineup for an extra boost.

How To Style Your Tresses For The New Season

If you’ve been fighting frizz all Summer, now’s the time to show off your natural texture without compromise.

“It’s the perfect time to celebrate your curls and waves,” Stenson shares with enthusiasm. “In the humid months, you tend to lose definition, but the cooler weather lets you lean into styles that enhance curl and volume.”

Of course, busy schedules don’t always leave time for elaborate styles, which is why Stenson swears by the bun as the ultimate go-to. “It’s the easiest style to transition from daytime to evening,” he explains, adding that the simple hairstyle can help you look polished without taking up your whole morning.

From sleek, low-slung buns that pair perfectly with blazers to messy top knots that give off laid-back cool, the bun works for any hair type or length. Add in some playful accessories like velvet headbands, jeweled pins, or even a little sparkle with hair gems to add a playful edge to the classic look.

If you’re craving something new but not ready for a full transformation, Stenson suggests a smaller step: extensions. Whether you’re experimenting with a streak of copper or just want a little more fullness for holiday events, extensions give you options without tying you down.

“Adding in a few pieces for a pop of color is a great way to change up your style without a huge commitment,” he says.

The ’90s Trend Is In Again!

Looking for a new hairstyle? Stenson suggests turning to the ’90s for inspiration. “Many trends from last Fall were 90s-inspired, and we’ll see that continuing this season,” he notes.

Actress Keke Palmer and singer Anitta became style muses last year for their elevated, modern takes on throwback glam. Think reimagined French twists done with voluminous curls, sleek bobs, sexy pixies, and lots of layers.

Healthy Hair, No Cares

It’s easy to get caught up in experimenting with shades or accessories, but without a healthy foundation, no trend truly shines. At the heart of all of these styles, Stenson circles back to one golden rule: healthy hair always wins.

“Hydration, hydration, hydration! The journey to luscious hair begins with moisture shampoo, conditioner, and a mask,” he reminds us.

So, what’s the takeaway? Embrace color if you’re ready, lean into buns and accessories when you’re busy, let your curls live their best life in the cooler air, and never forget that moisture is queen.

Whether you’re rocking Cowboy Copper, a 90s-inspired French twist, or a classic bun, remember: the goal is luscious, healthy, hydrated hair that makes you feel like you!
