It’s Summer Break! And as a school leader, I know firsthand how this time of year is coveted.
From the children and the parents to the teachers and school staff, everyone counts down to the days of Summer when we all can enjoy a much-needed break from the routine of early mornings, lessons, mandatory sleep times, and ironing school clothes.
It’s okay to admit it…lol.
But while you are thinking about unwinding and beach days, I also want to encourage you to use this time of year to rejuvenate, learn, and strengthen your bonds as a family. I’m talking everything from self-care and relaxation to cultural exploration, skill development, and community engagement.
Below, check out my suggestions for families to try this Summer if you want your children to return to school energized, prepared, and full of fun stories to tell.
Foster Emotional Well-Being As A Family
First things first, breathe. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Reset your social/emotional gauge by engaging in activities that promote emotional well-being as a family, like meditation, yoga, or journaling. These activities can help children manage stress and develop emotional resilience.
Also, consider having family meetings to create a safe space to share any feelings or concerns. Maintaining open lines of communication builds trust and helps children feel heard and supported.
Cultivate A Learning Environment

Summer doesn’t have to mean a break from learning. As a parent, take the initiative to create an engaging learning environment at home with fun activities like reading challenges and fun DIYs. This can include:
✨️ Reading Together: Establish a Summer reading challenge that includes both you and your children. Also, visit local libraries or bookstores to find out about the free literacy programs they have to offer.
✨️ STEAM Activities: Engage children in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) projects as a family. Simple experiments, coding games, or even gardening can be both educational and fun!
✨️ Set Goals: Encourage your children to set personal and academic goals for the new school year. This can instill a sense of purpose and motivation.
✨️ Cultural Education: Explore the rich history and contributions of our ancestors and present-day examples of #BlackExcellence in various fields. Organizing movie nights or discussions around documentaries/books can be a great way to spark interest and pride in cultural heritage.

Emphasize Physical Health
Physical activity is crucial for overall well-being. Encourage children to stay active by visiting local parks, community centers, or sports leagues. Outdoor activities like swimming, hiking, or joining a local sports team can build physical fitness and foster teamwork.
Summer is also a fantastic time to explore fresh fruits and vegetables. Involve children in meal preparation and activities like gardening to teach them about nutrition while enjoying delicious, healthy foods.
Strengthen Family Bonds With Quality Time
Don’t let the Summer pass you by without spending quality family time with your loved ones! Be intentional in reinforcing family connections by planning trips to museums, cultural festivals, or historical sites that celebrate Black heritage. This not only provides educational experiences but also strengthens family ties.
Also, consider regularly scheduling family game nights! It can be a great way to bond while encouraging fun, teamwork, and healthy competition.
Get Involved In The Community
Volunteering and being involved in the community can foster a sense of belonging and purpose. It can also teach your children to be more selfless while learning the importance of giving back to those in need.
As a family, find local organizations or initiatives that resonate with your values. Also, consider participating in community activities, workshops, and cultural events. This exposes children to diverse perspectives and helps them build social networks.
The Summer will go by in the blink of an eye. Before it’s over, enjoy every moment you can with your family. Breathe, learn, grow, give, and move!
I hope you have a great break! And see you in the Fall!
Be Well,
Coach Connie
