April is not just a stressful month because of tax season. For many families with school-aged children, it is the start of the standardized testing season (and sometimes academic stress).
As a principal and school leader, I’ve witnessed firsthand how students can begin to express signs of stress during the annual standardized testing window— everything from scholars showing up late for school due to oversleeping to students hyper-focusing on the tested subject to the detriment of other academic subjects.
It’s worth noting that children are not the only ones who experience anxiety, stress, and a sense of urgency during testing season.
Do you ever experience tension about being on time for testing, or find yourself worrying about your child’s testing experience? You are not the only one. Standardized tests can often be frustrating for both children and parents.
To all my lovely parents, I invite you to pause. Balancing academic performance with emotional well-being can be challenging, but it is not impossible. Below are a few strategies to assist you as you navigate this period with grace for yourself and your child(ren).
Supporting Your Child’s Journey
Exams should never overshadow a child’s joy of learning. Help take the pressure off you and your child; consider adding these strategies to your daily routine.

✨ Foster a Positive Mindset
Encourage your child to view testing as an opportunity to showcase their knowledge rather than a measure of self-worth. Remind your child that their value does not lie in an earned test score. Use affirmations and positive reinforcement to build their confidence while studying and before heading to school each day!
✨ Encourage Healthy Habits
Because testing season can feel like a high-pressure time for both you and your child, consider meal prepping to maintain a balanced diet. Accompanied by regular exercise and adequate sleep, it is key to staying healthy physically and mentally during testing season.
✨ Incorporate Fun Breaks Into Study Sessions
Make sure to incorporate breaks that allow your child to relax and recharge. Consider family game nights or outdoor activities to help the entire family unwind after a long day.
Prioritize Your Well-Being
This standardized testing season, I highly recommend that parents embrace self-care. Remember, our children learn from our behaviors.
✨ Set Boundaries
It’s easy to get caught up in the frenzy of preparing your child for tests. Make sure to carve out time for yourself each day, even if it is just 15-30 minutes to unwind.
✨ Practice Mindfulness
Incorporate mindfulness practices into your daily routine. Whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or journaling, holistic practices can help you manage stress and maintain clarity.
✨ Connect with Your Community
Lean on your support system. Share your experiences with other mothers who understand the unique challenges you face. Consider forming a self-care circle where you can uplift each other.
Lastly, remember that sharing is caring. Consider sharing these self-care strategies and tips with other mothers in your community. Let us continue to uplift and support one another as we navigate the challenges of parenting and education together!
